RENZINO BARBERA AND THE GRAND HOTEL EXCELSIOR

The hotel represented a valuable example of Moorish architecture , inspired by the “Ca’ d’oro” of Venice, and with the intention of revoking Greek, Roman and Medieval Taormina.

The great hotel was built on the remains of an ancient tower, known as the Tirone, on the southern entrance  to the city.

The History

In 1904 in Taormina Vincenzo Bottari founded the Grand Hotel Excelsior, with the name  Albergo Internazionale.
The structure was avant garde for the time in which it was built, it had a front face of more than 100 metres, facing towards Etna and the Bay of Naxos, and it deserved the enthusiastic compliments that King Vittorio Emanuele III, gave it during his visit.

From the nineteen twenties onwards, the Grand Hotel was among the first category hotels of the city, alongside the Timeo, the San Domenico, the Castellammare and the Villa San Pancrazio.

Various families would follow the Bottaris in owning the Hotel until reaching the current owners, the Ponte family from Palermo, who gave the go ahead for great restoration works, making the most of the hotel’s many external spaces. Among which notably is the park, with a magnificent green projection towards the Bay of Naxos. A frequent hotel guest and personal friend of the Ponte family was Renzino Barbera.

Descendent of an industrial family from Palermo and Taorminese by adoption, Barbera was a  humoristic writer, poet, cabaret star and creator of masks and characters that are well remembered today.
At the Excelsior, Renzino loved to spend many an afternoon, there on the splendid veranda that today echoes the verses that burst out of his volcanic pen, one afternoon many years ago. Cousin of the famous Renzo Barbera, “president” of Palermo football, he was loved by the people and known as one of the last true gentlemen of the Palermo of the past, among which one can not help but remember Prince Raimondo Lanza of Trabia, one of it’s more eccentric protagonists. Pleasure seeker and friend of Burt Lancaster and Alain Delon, Renzino started visiting Taormina in the seventies, moving to a small villa boasting a splendid sea and Etna view, along the bends that go up to Castelmola.

Certainly loyal to the motto of the Roman poet Terenzio “Homo sum: nihil humani a me alienum puto”, Renzino, with the versatility of his mind, he was able to capture the complexity of the human being in all its multiple faceting and it is until today listed among the fathers of Sicilian cabaret. He co authored with Tony Cucchiara, the musical comedy “Pipino il breve” and with Turi Ferro and Gerardo Farkas, ‘”Isola dei pupi”, a production of the Teatro Stabile of Catania. He collaborated with RAI as author and actor in many radio transmissions. Among the volumes published were : “Il giardino zooillogico di Renzino”, “Quando i grandi erano piccoli”, “F come fantasia”, which he illustrated himself and won the International prize  – the Martoglio of Children’s literature in 1992.

He was performer and author of the RAI 3 show “Il fico d’India” and author of a book and a CD of poetry in dialect, completed with photos of Alberto Piazza, that in 1969 was among the best-sellers in Italy.

In the introduction to the “Giardino Zooillogico” by Barbera, Massimo Simili, illustrious writer humorist and journalist, he expressed: «What is humour? For the Italians it is only the comic quality. In Italy farce and “calembour” are baptised “humour” just as we call “romantic” all that is archaic and sentimental. In Italy, it’s confusing. In many fields. But let’s admit , that humorists care more for the shadow than the body that projects it. In his case Barbera had everything needed to be a humorist and yet chose to continue as a poet and an author…».

He never wanted to stray far from Sicily to chase literary notoriety and on this subject he said: «I prefer to be a  modest prickly pear with my roots buried deep in my earth, than to be a precious rose torn from the plant, just for show in a room somewhere».

Still today the Grand Hotel Excelsior of Taormina preserves with love and great care the memory of  Renzino, as one of the most loved “honorary residents of Taormina”.

In Italien herrscht also eine ziemliche Verwirrung, in vielfacher Hinsicht.
