11. Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde arrived in Taormina in 1898, he was attracted, as was his friend Andrè Gide, by the climate Arcadian and the mythological fascination that Sicily offered to its visitors.

In Taormina he stayed in the Hotel Victoria, which still exists today on the Corso Umberto at number 81.

The History

Oscar Wilde arrived in Taormina in 1898, he was attracted, as was his friend Andrè Gide, by the climate Arcadian and the mythological fascination that Sicily offered to its visitors, as we can see in these verses, taken from “Charmides” and composed in 1881, well before his arrival on the island:

«He was a Grecian lad, who coming home
with pulpy figs and wine from Sicily
Stood at his galley’s prow, and let the foam
grow through his crisp brown curls unconsciously,
and holding wave and wind in boy’s despite
peered from his dripping seat across the wet and stormy night»

At the end of 1897 Wilde visited Sicily alone. In great financial difficulty, and also to contain the scandal born from his famous relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas, he decided to provisionally distance himself from the young Alfred, albeit with the intention of  being reunited soon after.

Having arrived in Sicily, the great Irish writer, accomplice to Taormina’s fascinating atmosphere, addressing his lover Alfred Douglas, known as “Bosie”,with thoughts of great intensity and feeling: “my arms without you, grasp a void”, “I’ve discovered a lover’s paradise where we will come to live together one day”.

As proof as to Wilde’s stay in Sicily, correspondence between the writer and his friend Robert Ross tells us of the numerous visits that Wilde made to Von Gloeden’s Taormina studio, which was already famous throughout Europe.
Oscar Wilde stayed for a month in Taormina and returned with his suitcase full of shots of those“marvellous boys”, how he defined the boys in the photographs of Von Gloeden, many of which he claimed to have prepared himself to pose for the photos. Still today, among the cards belonging to Oscar Wilde, there are two of  Von Gloeden’s photographs..

In Taormina he stayed in the Hotel Victoria, which still exists today on the Corso Umberto at number 81, which would show up, some years later in the travel diary of two Americans who came to Sicily: «In the centre of the city there was the Hotel Vittoria, frequented by artists and gourmets, famous for the food and the garden that climbed up the hillside, with flowery terraces, steps, bridges and small passage ways that led to buildings and courtyards on different levels».
Oscar Wilde left Taormina on the 13th  February of 1898. His friend Gloeden, asking him to return, he took him by the hand, and with great generosity and affection, offered him his house. Wilde responded with bitterness: «I thank you, but the Mediterranean sun is no longer for me. Alfred yes he loves the southern sun and can enjoy it, so young and in love with life.. I know that he is nearly settled in Capri, who knows if he won;t decide to stop off in Taormina, which we’ve talked about a lot and where we have dreamt for so long of living together one day».

The relationship between the writer and his young lover would soon deteriorate and this was bitter sweet. In 1900 Wilde returned to Sicily, just a few months before his death but he would never  again walk the streets of Taormina.

«He was a Grecian lad, who coming home
with pulpy figs and wine from Sicily
Stood at his galley’s prow, and let the foam
grow through his crisp brown curls unconsciously,
and holding wave and wind in boy’s despite
peered from his dripping seat across the wet and stormy night»

«He was a Grecian lad, who coming home
with pulpy figs and wine from Sicily
Stood at his galley’s prow, and let the foam
grow through his crisp brown curls unconsciously,
and holding wave and wind in boy’s despite
peered from his dripping seat across the wet and stormy night»
