The History

VILLA MON REPOS, AN OUTPOST ON A (BEAUTIFUL) WORLD

«Of all of the foreigners in Taormina, the best friendship I made was that with Barone S., a friendly man and late descendant of Kotzebue. Born like me on the Baltic sea, but in Curlandia like the lady of Krudener. He had a villa built in the most beautiful position of the peninsula where I forgot not only his misty castles, but also his wife, a thing that tormented him always because despite everything, it was his pride of his family which persisted in living on inside of him». The Baron photographer Von Gloeden uttered these words in the book by Roger Peyrefitte Eccentrici Amori.
The Barone S. was none other than Baron Stempel, owner of the elegant Villa Mon Repos in via Pirandello.
Villa Mon Repos, today a luxurious hotel and location of important events, was given its name by its old owner Karl Stempel, who moved there together with his mother, using as a storeroom the adjacent Villa Caronia, boasting a splendid garden and in an enviable position that today is property of the Sicilian region.
Stempel, who had had to endure the military pressure that had been placed on his home country, first by the Germans and then the Russians, retired to Taormina, wanting to recreate an oasis of peace far from the  warlike climate of his quarrelled over country.
The Baron arrived in Sicily managing to save part of his immense heritage from the confiscation of the Russians. He was a good friend of Gloeden who – Peyrefitte insists – helped him to learn the Sicilian dialect. Stempel invited the Russian prince Yussupov, Rasputin’s killer, to Taormina  until he realised that this act of hospitality towards him, whilst being pursued by secret service tsarists, would have put his security at risk.
After having left Villa Mon Repos, Stempel moved to casa Strazzeri, on the road leading to Castelmola, in the same rooms that just a few years later would be occupied by the French writer Roger Peyrefitte – to whom Stempel left us a true literary portrait.

In the sixties Villa Mon Repos became famous around the world thanks to Commander Domenico Guarnaschelli. The property was built in the centre of the villa on two floors surrounded by a 25,000 metre squared park, with facilities including an internal car park for 200 cars, a restaurant, bar, nightclub and games rooms.
Guarnaschelli chose it as the provisional location for the casino of Taormina, renting it whilst awaiting the restoration of the ex hotel Castellammare, bought in 1956 with agreement by the Region to give the permanent location of the Kursaal Casino of Taormina.
According to the assumed requirements laid out by the region, the company created a bathing facility and    branch called “la plage” in front of Isola Bella in Taormina.  The works remained incomplete in 1965, due to the closure of the casino at the hands of the judicial authority that at the same time wrecked a project to create another branch of the casino in the council of Acitrezza, near Catania.
During the so called “biennio d’oro” (1963-64)  which started running in the games house, known as Kursaal, the Villa became the meeting place of international stars like Marlene Dietrich, Gregory Peck and Cary Grant, stars of Italian cinema, the most famous artists of the time and high aristocracy.
While the Film Festival of Taormina celebrated ten years, the world revolved around the casino. In the park of olive trees that surrounded the Villa and in its sumptuous lounges, echoed famous performances by Dionne Warwick, Amelia Rodriguez and Charles Aznavour, memorable exhibitions by Corrado, Giorgio Gaber and Gino Paoli, and the appearances of stars like come Robert Mitchum, actress Shirley Mac Laine, Walter Chiari, Turi Ferro, Ave Ninchi, Gina Lollobrigida, Domenico Modugno, and Ave Ninchi.
The casino was definitively closed on 7th  January 1965 by the power of attorney of Messina.
Its historic manager Cavaliere Domenico Guarnaschelli, tried to realise his dream of restarting the casino right up until his death in 1998.
The casino with all its splendour, as with all dreams, just didn’t last long enough.
