The History

Francesca Vinciguerra was born in Taormina in 1900 to Domenico Vinciguerra and the singer Giovanna Sciglio. In 1907, her name became anglicized to Frances Winwar when, as a child she moved to the USA with her family.
After growing up in New York, she studied  at Hunter College and Columbia University.
Mastering perfectly Italian, English and French, she started working for the socialist magazine The Masses at eighteen years old.

In 1923 thanks to the publication of a literary essay in Freeman  magazine, she was taken on by  the literary editors of the magazine. She then started collaborating with the New York Times, New Republic and the Saturday Review of Literature.
She published her first novel in 1927, entitled The Ardent Flame and for this love story of Paolo and Francesca,  the New York Times Book Review defined her as “a poet in prose” (7th July 1927).
She was an appreciated author of many biographies of great writers and artists such as Poor splendid wings which tells the story of a group of Pre-Raphaelites, The romantic Rebels on the lives of the great English poets Byron, Keats and Shelley, Oscar Wilde and the yellow nineties, American Giant on the poet Walt Withman and The immortal Lovers on the writers Elizabeth Barrett & Robert Browning.
Her writing skills also extended to biographies. These works included the biographies of Elizabeth I, Napoleon and Edgar Allan Poe. She also wrote Giovanna d’Arco’s successful biography, with the preface by Ingrid Bergman who played the same role on the big screen.
In the 30’s and 40’s she became an antifascist. In 1937 she was the only Italian to speak during the second congress of American writers, where she made a speech by entitled  “literature under fascism”. On that occasion, in the great room, she chose strong words to make her point: «The dark six hundreds have again descended over intellectual Italy».
As well as being a successful writer she also translated many great works of Italian literature.
She translated Dante’s Divine Comedy and a few of Baudelaire’s poems and Decameron by Boccaccio. She translated for the Metropolitan Opera Association of New York  Simon Boccanegra by Verdi, Il signor Bruschino by Rossini and Don Carlo by Verdi.
Of socialist views, in 1923 she financed together with a few artists the Leonardo Da Vinci Art School in New York, an art institute created for the more deserving classes of the city.
She was married four times.
Frances Winwar succeeded in winning the affections both of the great public and of some of the most  important people in the world of international literature critics. Among these, Thomas Mann, Nobel prize winner for literature, said of George Sand’s biography – written by Frances Winwar: “written with greater artistry and a deeper feeling of reality than many another novels”.
Another great name in the international literature field, who also received a Nobel prize for literature, Maurice Maeterlinck, – when reviewing The Saint and The Devil, Giovanna d’Arco’s biography,  wrote of the Sicilian writer: «I read ‘The saint and the Devil’ with fascinated interest. The story of Joan of Arc, amply documented from the original sources, is here fully given in striking detail against the background of the times. As for Gilles de Rais, his tale unfolds like a terrifying poem, its sombre horror filling the heart with awe. In her treatment of the two contrasting lives, Frances Winwar comes very close to producing a masterpiece».
Frances Winwar died in her New York home in 1985. Her works have been translated all over the world.

So begann sie mit New York Times, New Republic und the Saturday Review of Literature zusammenzuarbeiten.

Sie begann ihre Karriere als Erzählerin 1927  mit dem Roman The Ardent Flame, eine Liebesgeschichte zwischen Paolo und Francesca, die der New York Times Book Review mit den Worten “a poet in prose” (7. Juli 1927) bedachte.

The dark Seicento has come again over intellectual Italy».

The story of Joan of Arc, amply documented from the original sources, is here fully given in striking detail against the background of the times. As for Gilles de Rais, his tale unfolds like a terrifying poem, its somber horror filling the heart with awe. In her treatment of the two contrasting lives, Frances Winwar comes very close to producing a masterpiece».
Frances Winwar verstarb in ihrem Haus in New York im Jahr 1985. Ihre Werke wurden weltweit übersetzt.

The Masses.

Freeman ,

New York World.

New York Times, New Republic, the Saturday Review of Literature.

По этому случаю, в огромном зале, она произнесла слова великой силы: «The dark Seicento has come again over intellectual Italy» (Мрачный семнадцатый век вновь прошелся над интеллектуальной Италией).

The Saint and The Devil , The Saint and The Devil с огромным интересом.
